RITA sponsors and supports an educational certification program that is recognized as an honor and distinction, and positions those who receive the designation as leaders in the field.

The Retirement Industry Trust Association (RITA) is proud to sponsor the RITA IRA Institute, A Focus on Self-directed IRA Administration and Investments. The IRA Institute is an advanced self-directed IRA class which is the only one of its kind in the self-directed retirement industry. It focuses on learning about alternative assets in IRA accounts such as precious metals, real estate, LLCs, promissory notes, and private stock, UBTI, regulatory examinations, required disclosures, Bank Secrecy Act and Anti-money Laundering requirements, industry best practices, and includes tips on fighting fraud in the IRA workplace.
This class is two (2) full days of hands on training including group interaction and problem solving. The faculty of the IRA Institute include industry professionals with practical experience, ERISA attorneys, and recognized national experts. The qualifying exam consists of 75 multiple choice questions and is given on the third day following the previous two days of class.
RITA Certified SDIP
The SDIP certification is the professional credential for self directed IRA industry professionals who have dedicated IRA technical, operational, and compliance oriented expertise. The RITA Certified SDIP designation signifies that an individual working in the self directed IRA industry has attained comprehensive training in the following areas: IRA alternative investments such as promissory notes, real estate, LLCs, precious metals, and private stock, prohibited transactions, UBTI, anti-fraud measures, disclosures, as well as expertise in IRA documentation, reporting requirements, eligibility and contribution requirements, IRA portability, and distributions. Candidates for the SDIP designation must attend the RITA IRA Institute 2-day program, pass the RITA IRA Institute Exam, have a minimum of two (2) years of dedicated IRA operational and technical experience, have either a CISP designation or pass the RITA IRA Fundamentals Exam, and have a letter of recommendation that attests to the candidate’s qualifications and IRA experience.
